Brilliantine - 1954 to 1973
Brilliantine was the first Shulton hair product, and sold
from 1954 to 1973. On the 1954 style the word
"Brilliantine"
is printed opposite "Old Spice." From 1960 to 1962, the jar was clear with gold lettering and
the top was white with a ship in a gold circle. From 1963 until 1973 the lettering on the jar was white, and
the lid held a ship in a gold circle in the center with "Old Spice
Brilliantine" around the edge.. Brilliantine was product id 392
until 1962 after which it was product 3920.

Hair Groom Tonic - 1956 to
1960
Hair Groom Tonic (Product ID 395) sold for four years and held 4
oz. of product. Its packaging did not change. |
Shampoo for Men - 1956 to 1980
Old Spice shampoo was sold from 1956 to 1980. Although the product
itself did not change much over those years, the packaging did, as
illustrated below.

In the images above, the smaller bottle is Product 3654 and held 7
ounces. From 1964 to 1970 this bottle held 7 3/8 ounces! The
smaller bottle is Product 3651 and held 16 ounces. Note the
subtle changes in packaging: in 1973 the volume is printed below the
word "shampoo." In 1979 the words "Old Spice" move above the white
ship.
Clear Hair Tonic - 1960 to 1973; Clear Hair Groom - 1974 to 1980
Clear Hair Tonic was a 6 oz. product that sold as Product ID 366
from 1960 to 1962, and as Product ID 3660 from 1963 to 1980. In the
early 1970s the volume was increased to 7 oz., a paper label appeared on
the bottle and the name was changed to Clear Hair Groom..

Shortcut Hair Groom - 1960 to 1980
In 1960,
Short Cut
(product id 360) joined Brilliantine in the growing line of Old
Spice Hair Products.. It was marketed specifically
for "crew and brush cuts" capitalizing on the popular men's hair
style of the day. It sold until 1980, held 1.75
ounces and originally cost 50 cents. The original style is
shown at top and appeared from 1960 until 1962. From 1963
until 1973, it appeared as shown in the center photo, with the
distinctive 1960's ship logo on the top. In 1974, the
lettering was removed from the glass jar and appeared in white
around the tim of the steel screw cap. .

Hair Cream - 1964 to 1975
Hair Cream in a tube was sold from 1963 to 1975 (product id
3050). The tube held 4 oz. The box was originally an "open"
affair as shown left, but in 1969 it changed to a more
traditional closed package. |

Lime Hair Tonic - 1967 to 1980
I am not sure of the date on product nor the market.
It is not in any of my US catalogs. None the less here is
the picture of a Lime-scented hair tonic. The owner of
this item reports that it is a small travel size container. |

Clear Hair Groom in a Tube - 1967 to 1968
Clear Hair Groom showed up in 1967 and was available for a
only a year or two (product id 3051). The tube held 4
ounces. |

Ship Shape Hair Groom Spray - 1967 to 1973
Ship Shape Hair
Groom Spray was introduced in
1967 in a 7 oz. can (product id 3670). In 1969 a 4 oz. can
was introduced (product id 3676).
The young man appeared on the can in 1973,
the same year an unscented version became available in a blue 7
oz. can just like the red one at left (product id 3851).
Ship Shape came off the market in all
forms in the mid-1970s.

Brushes and Combs
Over the years the "Old Spice" logo appeared on several hair
care products. Here are examples of a brush and comb set
that included a razor handle (probably 1970s) and a yellow hair
brush, age unknown.
